As a beauty writer, I’ve been Goldilocks-ing my way through various types of sunscreens, and after chatting with dermatologists, I’ve narrowed down the very best, combo-friendly sunscreens that keep my skin balanced and protected.

What should you look for when shopping for a sunscreen with combination skin?
“People with oily and acne-prone skin, including those with combination skin, should look for products that are labeled ‘non-comedogenic,’ says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon based in NYC. This means that they contain ingredients that won’t clog your pores. They should also have mattifying properties that can help soak up excess oil. “I usually recommend gel or water-based sunscreens for those with oily complexions so that they don’t leave a greasy finish behind. If there are specific areas where the skin needs hydration, look for sunscreens with hyaluronic acid that will help those areas maintain moisture,” says Dara Spearman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Radiant Dermatology Associates.
Is physical or chemical sunscreen better for combination skin?
According to the dermatologists we spoke with, both physical and chemical sunscreens are suitable for combination skin, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Chemical sunscreens protect our skin by absorbing UV rays, changing them to heat, then releasing them from our skin; they might not be suitable for those with relatively sensitive or combination skin. “Physical sunscreens will remain active even after significant exposure, and they’re not absorbed into the skin, so they’re less likely to cause irritation,” says Dr. Spearman.
How we tested sunscreens for combination skin
We tested sunscreens for combination skin by looking at their ingredients, their longevity, and if they were able to balance out our sometimes oily, sometimes dry skin types. We looked for mineral sunscreens for the most part (due to Dr. Spearman’s recommendation), and those that didn’t feel greasy or heavy after application. We also evaluated if they kept our skin matte and shine-free throughout the day, but didn’t dry out any areas thanks to ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.

It’s also lightweight, leaves a matte finish and is easy to apply,” says Dr. Spearman. Since it’s non-comedogenic and tinted, it’s ideal for acne-prone skin types because it will keep pores clear and reduce redness.
“This sheer tinted sunscreen is great for blurring and adding a bit of coverage. It might not be hydrating enough for some, so I would recommend layering on a hydrating serum or moisturizer beforehand. It meshes well with my makeup and helps mattify my oily complexion.
